Antimachia Castle – A Fortress of History Above the Aegean
Perched on a rocky plateau overlooking the sea, the Castle of Antimachia is one of the most impressive medieval fortifications on the island of Kos. Located near the village of Antimachia, in the heart of the island, this Venetian-era castle offers visitors a perfect blend of history, architecture, and panoramic views.
A Stronghold with Centuries of History
The castle was originally built by the Knights of Saint John in the 14th century, during a time when Kos was under the control of the Order. It served both as a military fortress and a strategic observation point, protecting the island from pirate raids and Ottoman invasions. Reinforced during the Venetian period, the castle’s thick stone walls and bastions still stand today as a testament to its defensive power.
Inside the castle grounds, you can explore two beautifully preserved churches — Agios Nikolaos and Agia Paraskevi — as well as the remains of homes, cisterns, and defensive structures that once formed a small, self-sustaining community.
Breathtaking Views and Open Skies
One of the highlights of visiting Antimachia Castle is the breathtaking 360-degree view from its walls. On a clear day, you can see as far as the Dodecanese islands, the southern coast of Kos, the Bay of Kardamena, and even parts of nearby Nisyros. The atmosphere is peaceful, often with few tourists, allowing you to explore at your own pace and imagine what life might have been like centuries ago.
A Great Stop for History Lovers and Explorers
The site is free to enter and can be reached easily by car or scooter. A short uphill walk takes you to the entrance, and while the terrain is uneven in places, the area is generally accessible and well worth the effort.
