Aspri Petra – The White Rock Cave of Kos
Nestled in the hills above Kefalos, on the southwestern side of Kos, Aspri Petra (meaning “White Rock” in Greek) is one of the island’s most intriguing and lesser-known archaeological and geological sites. This small prehistoric cave sits at an altitude of about 250 meters and offers not only a glimpse into the island’s ancient past, but also breathtaking panoramic views over Kefalos Bay and the surrounding countryside.
A Journey Back in Time
Aspri Petra is believed to have been inhabited since the Neolithic period, making it one of the oldest human settlements on Kos. Inside the cave, archaeological excavations have uncovered tools, pottery fragments, and evidence of ritual activity, dating back thousands of years. Although the site is small, its significance is great — it speaks to the early life of the island long before classical antiquity.
A Scenic & Peaceful Hike
Reaching the cave requires a short hike up a marked path that winds through pine trees and rocky terrain. The walk is relatively easy and suitable for most visitors with basic fitness. Once you arrive, you’ll be rewarded with stunning views over the Aegean Sea, the islet of Kastri, and the southern coastline of Kos — especially beautiful during sunrise or late afternoon light.
The cave itself is small and shallow, but the white limestone rock and tranquil setting create an almost mystical atmosphere. It’s a peaceful spot for travelers interested in archaeology, nature, and scenic photography.
